Frequently asked questions

How much smaller is WebP than PNG?

For photos, often 70–90%. For flat graphics with transparency, typically 25–50%.

Will WebP work in emails?

Many email clients don't support WebP yet. Use JPG or PNG for email.

Can I go back from WebP?

Yes, convert WebP to JPG or PNG any time, though lost detail can't be restored.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Files are decoded, processed and re-encoded by your browser using the canvas API and Web Workers. Nothing is sent to any server, and there is no account or storage. Closing the tab discards everything.
