Frequently asked questions

Why is the average color dull?

Averaging mixes all colors, which tends toward muted tones. The dominant color is usually more saturated.

What is it used for?

Image placeholders while loading, matching backgrounds, and color-based sorting.

Is the whole image measured?

Yes, using a downscaled copy, which gives the same average much faster.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Files are decoded, processed and re-encoded by your browser using the canvas API and Web Workers. Nothing is sent to any server, and there is no account or storage. Closing the tab discards everything.
