About this tool

Be realistic about joined-up cursive: this engine is trained mainly on print, so connected handwriting will contain mistakes. Lines with low confidence are highlighted in amber so you know what to check.

Frequently asked questions

Does it read cursive?

Only partially. It works best on print-style handwriting with separated letters.

How can I improve accuracy?

Photograph in good light, fill the frame with the writing, and avoid shadows across the page.

Is my image sent to an OCR service?

No. The text recognizer (Tesseract) is downloaded from this site once and runs entirely in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Files are decoded, processed and re-encoded by your browser using the canvas API and Web Workers. Nothing is sent to any server, and there is no account or storage. Closing the tab discards everything.
