Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my image get?
Photos typically shrink by 50–90% when saved as JPG or WebP at quality 70–85 with little visible change. Screenshots and graphics respond better to PNG or WebP.
Why doesn't the PNG quality slider change anything?
PNG is lossless, so it has no quality setting. To get much smaller files, convert to WebP or JPG, or reduce the dimensions.
Does compressing reduce image dimensions?
Not unless you set a maximum width. By default only the encoding changes, so width and height stay the same.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Files are decoded, processed and re-encoded by your browser using the canvas API and Web Workers. Nothing is sent to any server, and there is no account or storage. Closing the tab discards everything.
